SOPHOMORE YEAR
Endless Opportunities
Over this past academic year, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a number of incredible projects and teams that have allowed me to grow and establish myself here at IUPUI. I've always been inspired to keep reaching for the stars! All of these experiences have contributed to the path that will lead me to my future career as a physical therapist.
HONORS COLLEGE STUDENT COUNCIL
I joined HCSC originally as the Second Year Representative in Fall 2021. I later became the Marketing Coordinator. My positions include outreach to honors students and connection to Honors staff. Our club supports the honors college clubs and all of their endeavors. It's taken my creative side to engage with followers on our social media and create posters advertising our weekly meetings. Our most recent committees included a popcorn committee and a sticker committee. I have found a leadership position which has allowed me growth through communication and collaboration.
HONORS COLLEGE PEER MENTOR PROGRAM
I applied to become an Honors College Peer Mentor to positively impact the students who were in my shoes a year ago! As a mentor, I was paired with two mentees that are pursuing similar degrees to mine. As a volunteer, I met with each of my mentees twice a month for at least 30 minutes during Fall 2021. We discussed their transitions to IUPUI and goals on their mind. We created plans to hold each other accountable for our goals. At the end of the program, I felt connected to my mentees. They both had taught me more about how to build networking skills and connect with the community. It was an wonderful program that brings together the Honors College!
MOTOR ACTIVITY CLINIC
I have recently begun as a volunteer at the Motor Activity Clinic here at IUPUI. Hosted ion the Natatorium, the MAC aims to provide physical activity programming for Indianapolis youth with disabilities. As a volunteer, I have worked to help student leaders in the class to accomplish well thought out lesson plans focusing on strength and skill building. For the spring, the clinic lasted a total of 6 weeks. Every Saturday morning, I was greeted with big smiles and an energy surplus. The Natatorium gym and the warm-up pool were filled with both students and their clients. I experiences a lot of adaptability because, being a volunteer, I had to be ready to fill in at a moment's notice. Over my time, I had the pleasure of working individually with clients where I was challenged in the best way possible. Even though I have just started my journey at the MAC, I can see how it truly is a unique experience beyond the classroom.
BEPKO LEARNING CENTER
Anatomy N261 Mentor
My first job on campus has been an academic mentor for the Bepko Learning Center. Being a mentor includes leading a mandatory class, a voluntary class, and hosting a one-on-one tutoring hour. You can catch me most days on campus in Taylor Hall, where the BLC is located. As a mentor, I am a student leader who has done well previously in anatomy myself. My job is to incorporate collaborative learning techniques to teach current students taking the course. While it seems like teaching, it is much more to me. I have a duty to show students how to become independent learners! I am trained in techniques such as the Study Cycle and Bloom's Taxonomy. Even so, I wanted to become more involved at the BLC. I was offered a position as an Assistant Coordinator in Spring 2022. I offer support to Academic Coordinators that oversee the daily running of all of the academic mentors. I work on semester long projects and collaborate with my fellow mentors behind the front desk of the BLC. This job has taken me so far, and I cannot wait to see where else I can grow in at the Bepko Learning Center.
KINE-P403
Theory and Practice of Cardiovascular Fitness
I have had the great fortune of taking this class during my undergraduate experience. Part of this class encompassed weekly labs with involving explanations of the different kinds of cardiovascular fitness, how to incorporate these into a workout, and how to teach others. The other part of this course was in class lecture with guest speakers, interactive PowerPoints, analysis of studies, and discussion between classmates. One part of this course I enjoyed was preparatory training and conduction of a a 5K. For a few weeks, our classes trained together in lab and individually to either run or fitness walk these 3.1 miles. On the day of the 5K, our class met outside the Indianapolis canal. I pushed myself to run as best as I could, and I was proud of my end time. I had no prior experience running in such a race. It was truly a unique experience to share with my classmates that made my time in this class worth it.
